Postponed from January. To win the U16 Singles Max beat the Sherborne Nr 1 (on his own court) 11-0, 11-0; the St. Paul's Nr 2 11-8, 11-2 and, in the Final, the Bradfield Nr 1 11-6, 1-11, 11-3. At the National Championships next month he will be seeded Nr 1. Our other two U16 players, Jimmy Goodwin and Mike Baxter, did very well. Jimmy lost 14-16 in the quarter-final (had he won that match he would have played Max) after beating the Winchester Nr 1. Mike was playing in his first tournament in his first year of fives: he beat the Nr 1 from Blundell's, then lost to the St. Paul's Nr 2. Together, in the U16 Doubles, Jimmy and Mike lost a three-game quarter-final thriller to the eventual winners: St. Paul's 1. There is no doubt Max and Jimmy would have won the competition if they had played together. However, Max played in the U18 age group with Anthony Goodwin. To win that competition they beat Winchester 1, St. Paul's 1 (most people's favorites) and, in the final, Christ's Hospital 1. Probably no one as young as Max has ever won the U18 Doubles. The two of them will be seeded Nr 1 at the National Championships. Anthony was disappointed to lose in the quarter-final of the U18 Singles to the Winchester Nr 1, having previously beaten the Marlborough Nr 1 and the Tonbridge Nr 1.
